Why Lady Ir Is Being Attacked on Social Media

It is no secret anymore: in Suriname, the moment you express an independent opinion, you are quickly labeled an enemy. And today, we are watching that same pattern unfold again — live, right before our eyes.
Everything started with one simple, harmless video. Irma Koorndijk, better known on Facebook as Lady Ir and known for her political commentary, released a video in which she offered advice to former Vice President Michael Ashwin Adhin. Her message was straightforward:
“Leave the party you are in, because you are not appreciated there.”
According to Lady Ir, Adhin has long been the striker, driving force, and pride of the NDP, and without him the party would not be in the coalition today.
That statement ignited outrage. Social media exploded with anger, insults, and emotional reactions. It became pure chaos. Even sharp-tongued commentator Marcel Oostburg stumbled over his own words. Others rushed to defend their party with inappropriate language — revealing more about themselves than about the political movement they claim to support.
Let’s Put the Facts in Order
Before 1980, the Surinamese guilder was worth three times the Dutch guilder.
After the revolution, the currency collapsed and never recovered its former strength.
Suriname was once ranked among the 17 richest countries in the world.
Today, partly due to IMF involvement, Suriname has slipped to the level of a third‑world country — perhaps even worse.
The SRD has almost no value, and a stable exchange rate has long disappeared.
The abolition of monetary policy under the late President Venetiaan turned Suriname into a heavy import‑dependent nation.
The NDP did bring visible development: infrastructure, education, housing projects, social programs, and more. But the cost was high: loans, debt, and political favoritism.
Today we see questionable appointments again, such as Steve Meye — a self‑proclaimed bishop with no relevant academic background — becoming Suriname’s ambassador to Israel.
Meanwhile, the public continues to crave a populist leader, while the current Vice President remains largely invisible. But the real question is:
What does Suriname truly need? A results‑driven leader focused on recovery? Or a popular entertainer with a long‑term plan that never materializes?
Surinamers forget quickly. And a large part of the population suffers from brain drain — the people who could help rebuild the country are leaving.
Can Someone No Longer Share Their Opinion?
Dear followers, where is our right to free expression? Have we really become so fragile that a simple opinion throws us off balance?

And all of this can be done without insulting or degrading one another.
